What Is Needle-free Acupuncture and How Did It Migrate From Japan to San Antonio?

Needle-free acupuncture is one of many healing methods adopted and refined by renowned TCM practitioner Steven “Doc” Blackstone. Its origins lie in the esoteric practice of Japanese Toyohari Style acupuncture. In their endeavor for perfection the Japanese took over 2,500 years of acupuncture tradition from Chinese teachings and literature and turned it into a powerful, yet gentle art. Amazingly, they accomplished the feat within a span of less than 400 years.

Before he became affectionately known to patients as “Doc”, Steven spent 20 years of intensive study in the area of martial arts and Chinese Medicine before enrolling at the Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin in the mid 2000s. During his term at AOMA he gained interest in a Japanese style of acupuncture referred to as Toyohari. Deeper interest sparked after his friend and colleague (J.C.) returned having attended the revered all blind Toyohari Acupuncture school in Japan. Inspired by renowned practitioners like Miki Shima, he combined intuitive techniques with the finely honed methods of the Japanese to create an effective healing system free of the use of traditional acupuncture needles.

Doc moved his healing practice from Austin, Texas to the San Antonio area in 2010 where he continued to gain distinction. He now services patients from all over the world from his modest office in Alamo Heights.

As a child I found countless hours of enjoyment unraveling and solving puzzles of every variety. The more challenging the puzzle, the more compelled I was to solve it. Inevitably, that extraordinary interest combined with an innate curiosity of nature and how things work sparked my passion for deciphering the puzzles of human nature; specifically, the development and treatment of illness.

I dedicated decades to learning everything I could about the healing arts with the intention of extracting every relevant bit of information from a multitude of healing modalities. Eventually, my studies encompassed topics ranging from Toltec teachings to advanced Western medicine. From numerous healing modalities I plucked the most useful and cohesive techniques and principles.

I am immensely grateful to have been coached by many open, patient and compassionate teachers who have offered insight into various disciplines and humbly pointed the way to self discovery.

In my endeavor to master a variety of key disciplines I found myself embracing one crucial and inevitable discovery.

Isn't All Acupuncture the Same?

There’s the Way Everyone Does It

Generally, an acupuncturist would have a person lie in an isolated room for an extended period of time with acupuncture needles placed in areas of the body. The needles are expected to attenuate the movement of energy (Qi) without any additional influence from the from the practitioner. Multiple patients at a time are often attended to in this fashion. The situation is like leaving a pot on the stove unattended. When the patient is “fully cooked” the needles are withdrawn. That ends the treatment portion of the visit. Few practitioners do evaluations during or immediately following treatments to determine level of effectiveness. The practitioner may imply that the health condition may take numerous sessions to resolve because “everybody’s different”.

...And There's the Way Doc Performs Therapy

The way Doc performs his healing  techniques is really not like acupuncture at all. In fact, application of needle-free acupuncture methods requires more time in direct physical contact with the patient than Chinese acupuncture methods. Doc Blackstone focuses on one person at a time getting to know how you developed your health condition. He explains what is happening and what will occur during treatment. As the body gravitates to a renewed level of wellness each therapy session changes accordingly. Doc talks to patients throughout a session unless he believes total silence is best. Most practitioners do not have the stamina to perform the  dynamic work Doc does on a regular basis.

Expertise in Traditional Chinese Medicine and extensive knowledge of other healing modalities led to the evolution of a cohesive new practice- Sacred Healing Tree. The healing model includes techniques and theories that extend beyond ancient Chinese and Japanese healing traditions. Sacred Healing Tree therapy embraces knowledge of medical concepts and technology that was not available to practitioners in ancient times. The cornerstone ideals and strategies have been meticulously revised over the course of the last 30+ years. Only the most powerful and effective healing methods throughout history remain in use.

Time-Tested Healing

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese healing practice that dates back over 2,500 years. The Japanese perfected its methods for an additional 400 years developing it into an esoteric art. Over the last 20 years Doc has extracted needle-free acupuncture methods from Japanese Toyohari style acupuncture and incorporated them into an amazingly effective therapy regimen.

Doc’s Approach: “One Up”

Accurate diagnosis is paramount. Doc Blackstone will devise a therapy plan and discuss it with you. Then, initiate the most ingenious treatment you’ve ever had.

In addition to the dismissal of needles from the acupuncture process Doc has adopted a one-on-one approach to therapy. No multiroom office complex where your time is divided between numerous other patients.

  • One patient.
  • One room.
  • One session at a time.

As the healing process takes place during the course of therapy, the treatment is modified accordingly. Each person receives the maximum amount of stimulation required to achieve their health goals. As such, every therapy session will be a different experience, unlike chiropractic or physical therapy where the same techniques are applied repeatedly.

Doc may recommend a high quality Chinese patent formula when he decides that herbal medicine will work best.
